I have deactivated my Facebook account for the past week. At first, I thought it might be hard to leave what I assume another important thing next to oxygen, but, wow, it has already been one week. I'm proud of myself for doing it.
In my experience on Facebook, I have seen everything. From reading informative post to false post which, unfairly, was shared largely by the people on the Internet. From useless status updates to useful but less status updates. From open-minded posts to bigoted posts. All of them I have seen since I created a Facebook account on 2009. I have also seen my friends sharing religious posts, all of them are not in my interest but I couldn't have one day pass without stumbling-upon anything about "You-can't-do-this-because-it's-a-sin" which I highly think that was actually made-up, condemning anything about the Western culture, condemning current trends like Harlem Shaking, Gwiyomi and dancing PSY's Gangnam Style (All of them I don't have interest in them), and sharing conspiracy's. Another thing I observed that during the 2012 Olympics, lots of people shared about how it was a way the "Illuminati" to establish the "New World Order", or how the opening ceremony looks like a satanic ritual, or how the mascot and the stadium have the "All Seeing Eye". I saw them circulating all along until when the Olympics came to an end, so does the sharing of those posts. It's funny, because people like to jump into any bandwagon, thinking that they're doing something for the world when in fact they look like the actual fools.
Another thing that happened on Facebook which I don't care but was force fed upon was during the General Election of 2013 in Malaysia. There was a blackout during the counting of the ballot and when the blackout is gone, for some weird reason there was an increase of total of ballot pages on the ruling party side. People called it bullshit and to protest it, they changed their profile picture to a blank black image. Of course, I didn't join. Days later, they changed back to their old profile picture. A half-assed effort, I say.
After the deactivation of my FB account, I wondered how am I going to keep in touch with my family and friends? Then, I realized, nobody gives two fuck about me and anything I shared on that site. So, me leaving that site is not a concern to anybody. I can keep in touch with my family with my hand-phone. That's its purpose. I feel bliss without Facebook. It helps me to concentrate on my hobbies. I hope this will go on forever, or at least for years. I will never make another Facebook account.
